In normal circumstances a lecturer whose services have proved satisfactory to the Council, may expect in due course to be given the status of a senior lecturer. LECTURESHIP IN CLASSICS: The person appointed should be capable of taking classes in Greek and Latin from Stage 1 to Honours standard. LECTURESHIP IN EDUCATION: The person appointed should be prepared to teach at all stages up to Honours standard. It is desirable, although not essen tial, that applicants should have had some experience of school teaching or of some other educational activity.

SENIOR LECTURESHIPS/LECTURESHIPS IN ENGLISH: The persons appointed should be prepared to undertake general teaching within the B.A. and M.A. courses of English Language or English Literature. LECTURESHIP IN THE HISTORY AND THEORY OF FINE ARTS: Applicants should be university graduates in the History of Art. SENIOR LECTURESHIP/LECTURESHIP IN ITALIAN. The person appointed will be required to teach Italian language and literature within the range from Preliminary to Honours All applicants must hold an Honours degree in Italian. SENIOR LECTURESHIPS-' LECTURESHIPS IN MATHEMATICS: Applicants with special qualifications in one or more of the following fields will be par-

ticularly welcome abstract algebra, algebraic topology, differential geometry, functional analysis, numerical analysis, probability theory. SENIOR LECTURESHIPS/LECTURESHIPS IN PHYSICS: The persons appointed will be expected to take part in the teaching and examining of Physics at all stages and to engage in research. The Department is Interested in various research fields, including experimental and theoretical nuclear physics, high-speed electronics, semiconductor devices, ultrasonics and underwater propagation, atmospheric electricity, ionospheric studies and geomagnetism. The Laboratory carries out research on the psysiology, pharmacology and biochemistry of experimental shock by a team of five research workers who are well equipped. The appointment is for two years, and for an appointee with appropriate qualifications and experience, carries a salary of $5390 per annum in the first year, and $5600 per annum in the second year. Previous experience in the field, a higher degree or membership of one of the Colleges, although an advantage, is not required.
