Conquering 'The Glen'
Excitement ran high at Balmacewen golf course, Dunedin, recently when Arnold Palmer’s drive carried the ninth green after flirting with the gorse-clad sides of the narrow ravine which forms this forbidding 385 yd hole. Officials of the Otago Golf Club claimed that this was the first time that anyone had driven the green at “The Glen” since the days of the late A. H. Boyd. But they were forgetting the feat of the prominent Canterbury player, R. E. Clements, who not only reached the green with his tee shot but put his ball past it. He made this prodigious hit during the Freyberg Rose Bowl series in 1963.
