FIRECRACKER EXPLODES

Boy Severely Burned (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 2. Shaun O’Neill, aged five, of 18 Mawhare street, Titahi Bay, was seriously injured when a firecracker exploded petrol fumes in the tank of an abandoned car near his home today. He suffered severe burns to his face, eyes, ears and hair and his condition is critical. Late tonight he was still in Wellington Hospital. The police said Shaun was letting off firecrackers with several other boys. He had tried to put a lighted firecracker into the open petrol tank of an abandoned car. The firecracker apparently exploded gas and petrol in the tank. Shaun had been standing only feet away from the mouth of the tank when the explosion occurred. He is the son of Mr and! Mrs Patrick J. O’Neill.
