'Would Want To Be Savage’

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 3. A Maori minister told the Presbyterian General Assembly today that if it did not believe in the bodily Resurrection of Christ he would “want to become a savage again.”

Taking part in the debate on the Church’s theological dispute, the Rev. H. Potatau, Moderator of the Presbyterian Maori Synod, said he had visited Palestine —“the land of our Lord.” He added: “If we do not accept the bodily Resurrection of Christ we might as well wipe out the whole of Palestine.” When the first conversions of the Maori people took place they believed in the bodily Resurrection, he said. “So, if the Assembly does not believe in this 1 want to

become a savage again,” said Mr Potatau. Mr Potatau’s remarks were greeted with applause. Mr Potatau is a former lance-corporal in the 28th Maori battalion. He later tbld a reporter he had visited Palestine four times in 19431944 while serving with the battalion in the Middle East and had seen other features of Christianity. “I could have quoted Scripture in support of what 1 said to the Assembly but I gave practical examples,” he said.
