ALL- N.Z. FINISH TO V.R.C. OAKS

MELBOURNE. New Zealand made a clean sweep of the V.R.C. Oaks Stakes, the main race of the third day of the Melbourne spring carnival at Flemington yesterday. The one mile and a half Oaks was clearly won by the Agricoia—Geneve filly, Farmer’s Daughter, with the Waikatotrained What Fun second, and the favourite. Star Belle, which was ridden by the New Zealand jockey, G. F. Hughes, third. Farmer’s Daughter, ridden by J. Miller, raced away from the field to win easily. Miller, who comes from South Australia, rode the New Zea-land-bred Galilee to victory in both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. The judges had to call for a photo to decide the minor placings. What Fun, which is trained by J. P. Hayes, of Te Awamutu. just got the verdict over Star Belle. What Fun is a stablemate of the mare, Chantal, which won the A.J.C. Epsom this year. Farmer’s Daughter started at 5/1, with What Fun at »/2 and Star Belle 4/1 joint favourite.

The New Zealand-bred Gay Filou (Le Filou—Dulcie), starting at 11/2, beat the favourite to win the November Hurdle, the first race on the card. The fourth favourite of sis starters, Gay Filou led most of the way and won easily by 10 lengths beating Deck (Favourite at 7/4), with Dieppe 15 lengths away third. The New Zealand-bred three-year-old, Magic • Flute, caused an upset when he beat the Caulfield Cup place-getter, Pharaon, which was also bred In the Dominion, in the Batman Stakes. Magic Flute (8/1) beat Pharaon (5/2 on) by a head, with Tally Tim (15/1) three lengths away third. Magic Flute is by Alcimedes out of Balgana. and Pharaon is by Pharamond out of First Nibble. The Dunedin-trained Bastille disappointed his backers who sent him out 0/4 favourite in the 13-furlong Raymond Stakes, when he ran second to Lord Palford. . Lord Palford (3/1) scored by a head from Bastille, ridden by E. J. Didham. with Versailles (9/2) two lengths and a half away third. The former New Zealander, Empyreus (11/2). was unplaced.
