TROTTING Small, Select Field For N.Z. Cup

Although the 11 starters make up one of the smallest New Zealand Cup fields for some years, it has not been uncommon for such a small field to start in the big Addington two-miler.

Certainly, it is some time since such an even field has been engaged and few of the runners can be taken lightly in Tuesday’s contest.

The last time there were 11 starters in the cup was in 1958 when False Step beat Caduceus and Gentry in the first of his three successes in the race. Thunder had only 10 rivals when he won the race in 1956. beating Laureldale and Caduceus. It was 21 years before that such a small field had contested the , cup. That was in 1935 when Indianapolis gained the second of his three wins in the race, beating War Buoy on a heavy track. Lordship will make his fourth appearance in the cup. He won as a four-year-old in 1962, finished third to Caimbrae and Orbiter in 1964 and was unplaced 12 months ago. Robin Dundee has had two previous attempts to win the race, finishing second to Cardigan Bay in 1963 and second to Garry Dillon 12 months ago. Master Alan, third in 1963, Waitaki Hanover, unplaced in 1964, and Lochair, unplaced 12 months ago, are the only others to have contested a cup before.

Light Brigade and Hal Tryax are the only sires with more than one runner in Tuesday’s race. Light Brigade will be represented by Cuddle Doon and Lochgair, and Full Sovereign and Robin Dundee are by Hal Tryax. Fallacy, the sire of Doctor Barry, and Masterpiece, the sire of Master Alan, were both got by Light Brigade. U. Scott is the sire of Disband, Newport Chief, the sire of Tobias, Johnny Globe the sire of Lordship, Smokey Hanover, the sire of Oakhampton, and Harrison Hanover, the sire of Waitaki Hanover. Tobias is certain to attract attention to his sire, Newport Chief. He is one of the first crop sired by the Americanbred stallion.

Six-year-olds, with four runners, are certain to have a big say in the finish. Horses in this age group are Cuddle Doon, Disband, Full Sovereign and Lochgair. Tobias, at four years, is the baby of the field, being a year younger than Doctor Barry. Oakhampton is a seven-year-old, and Waitaki Hanover and Lordship are a year older. Master Alan and Robin

Dundee, nine-year-olds, are the veterans of this year’s field. This year’s 11 runners have had 166 wins in New Zealand. In addition they have recorded 236 placings and won £161,259 in stakes.
