RUSSLEY HALL
Committee Formed A community hall for the Russley district was badly needed and the Government's offer of a combined school and community centre was a welcome one, said Mrs C. C. Holland. She was the convener of a public meeting at the Russley school to form a hall committee. Mrs Holland said that as far as she knew, there were only three other halls of this type in the South Island. “It is the Government's policy to allocate six halls a year,” she said. The Russley school committee was advised in September that it had been allocated a hall and, on instruction from the Canterbury Education Board, a public meeting was called. It was attended by 17 persons from church, y outh and community organisations as well as by school committee members. Mrs Holland said that the board was preparing working drawings which would be ready soon. It was not known when construction would start. Sketch plans for the new hall, which will cost about £12.000, were shown to those present. A constitution was prepared and formally accepted by the meeting which was told that the cost of maintaining the hall would be met by the Canterbury Education Board. Money for fittings, furniture and extra seating will be raised by the hall committee. Officers elected were: Chairman. Mr G. Shaw: treasurer, Mr D. O'Malley; secretary, Mr L. Alsop; committee, Messrs H. Hudson, E. Busch, D. Stewart and Mesdames V. Giddens, S. Greenfield, G. Day, H. Busch, J. Schwass and I. Williamson.
