Computer Used Too
As National Mortgage's new woolstore at Woolston provides for maximum mechanisation of wool handling, so the firm too applies modern mechanical aids in the massive accounting job that is associated with wool sales. This involves the use of a computer in Wellington which has to work a little overtime after every sale in Christchurch or in any other
wool selling centre. The result is that growers’ account sales are in the Christchurch office of the firm within 24 hours of the sale finishing and are ready for posting out to vendors at that stage. Actually by the time these account sales reach Christchurch, buyers’ invoices are already in the mail, having been posted in Wellington. In the days before the computer was used this
same job would have taken 10 days, even with the aid of electric calculating machines. The introduction of monthly wool sales caused the brokers to move into use of computers for wool sale accounting. At this stage they were faced with the alternative of increasing their staffs and of housing them as well to get the job done speedily.
