Bulawayo lived up to its tribal name as the “Place of Slaughter” when 20 Australian and Rhodesian Invitation XI wickets fell in an actionpacked opening day on Wednesday. The Australians, all out in the closing minutes, for 211, hold a 105-run lead over the Invitation XI, which collapsed soon after lunch for 107. It was an eventful opening to the Australian tour. For much of the day the Australians held command but in the mid-afternoon their 1 middle and tailend batsmen fell in confusion.

The Australian bowlers—G. D. McKenzie, D. Renneberg, G. Watson and J. Hubble—routed the Invitation XI. Watson. in his debut, captured four for 25, including the wicket of the test batsman, K. C. Bland, for a duck.

Top scorers for Australia were W. M. Lawry (62) and R. M. Cowper (65).
