BEST OF TOUR

Wallabies I Win, 25-6 (Special Ospdt. N.Z.P.AA EBBW VALE (Wales) The Wallabies’ star halfback, K. Catchpole, showed glimpses of brilliance, leading Australia to an impressive win, 25-6, against the combined Welsh clubs of Ebbw Vale and Abertillery. It was the biggest victory of the tour. The Australians have now won four successive matches after losing the opening match of the tour.

Catchpole was captain in the absence of J. Thornett, and it seemed to inspire his game. He scored two tries himself and was the architect of the last try of the match, scored by the left-winger, A. Cardy. The Australian forwards again played well and assumed control of the match during the second half. Their line-out play was again good, with the second row forward, R. Heming, winning more than his share of possession Catchpole was limping slightly after the game and needed to have his right ankle, strapped. The manager. Mr W. McLaughlin, said afterwards: “It was a most satisfying win and certainly all is well for the tour.”

The win avenged the 5-6 loss that the 1957-58 Wallabies suffered against Ebbw Vale and Abertillery when the referee made a mistake and stopped the game five minutes early.
