General News

Another Visit In May last, the New Zealand Shipping Company’s veteran cargo liner Hororata made her farewell visit to Lyttelton before being sold or broken up. However, as has sometimes happened with other notable vessels, she is making yet another voyage. The Hororata is due at Auckland in early December with Continental cargo for discharge and should arrive at Lyttelton on or about December 30.

First To Vote Voting in the New Zealand general election will open in London on Monday. About 3000 New Zealanders are expected to record their choice, either in person at New Zealand House or by postal ballots. Voting will continue until 7 p.m. on November 25, the eve of the election.—London, November 3. Old Opponents Only three of the 80 electorates have the same General Election candidates this year as they had in 1963. One is Riccarton, where the sitting Labour member of Parliament, Mr M. A. Connelly, will again be opposed by Mr I. G. B. Wilson, for the National Party, and Mr C. E. Cullen, for the Social Credit Political League. The other electorates are Hobson and Rodney. Roundabout As soon as Drainage Board contractors have finished work in the vicinity, Waimairi County Council workmen will start on the £7OOO traffic roundabout in Harewood road at the Bishopdale shopping centre. Kerbing and channelling has been completed on the north corner of Highsted road in preparation. Appeal For Care The hope that parents would do their best to control children letting off crackers tomorrow on Guy Fawkes Day was expressed by the Christchurch Chief Fire Officer (Mr L. R. Osmond) yesterday. “Firemen are not spoil-sports,” he said. “We know that children, and adults, will enjoy the fireworks. We hope that enjoyment will not be spoiled by injury to persons or damage to property from burns and fires. A degree of parental control and common-sense precautions will ensure that the celebrations bring misfortune to nobody.”
