GAMES IN 1974
Council Not To Support (N.Z. Press Association» AUCKLAND. The Mayor of Auckland (Dr. R. G. McElroy) will not commit his council to support an application to hold the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Auckland.
A statement released by the Mayor says: “While I am unable to commit the council to actively support the application of the Auckland Amateur Sports Association to stage the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Auckland, should the application be successful the games would doubtless be welcomed in the city.” The statement followed a meeting between the Mayor and the president of the sports association, Mr B. Simpson. A letter was sent to the Olympic and British Empire Games Association yesterday, advising that it is the desire of the association to apply to stage the games in Auckland. The letter also states the association would prefer to delay submission of the formal application to stage the games until the spring of 1969.
The association represents 17 sports, including all those on the Commonwealth Games calendar.
