Policy On Vietnam
(N.Z. Preu Association) DUNEDIN, Nov. 1. New Zealand was making only a token contribution in Vietnam, the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk) said tonight. New Zealand should increase its contribution but it should be more constructive. “Under a Labour Government, New Zealand will continue to help the South Vietnamese,” he said. “Our in- ' olvement and contribution will be greater, but our role will be changed.” Mr Kirk reaffirmed that the artillery battery in Vietnam would be replaced by substantially increased personal and constructive aid. “Aid granted will include medical aid and agricultural assistance,” he said. "Out of recognition of the appalling suffering and great need of maimed and orphaned children, we will offer to establish in Vietnam an institution for these children and to maintain and staff it for a minimum period of 10 years.” Mr Kirk said there were 80.000 orphans in South Vietnam.
“A peaceful solution to th situation in Vietnam is th' world’s most urgent need. Under the present Govern ment, New Zealand’s civiliai aid to Vietnam this yea would amount to onl; £200,000, which would comi out of Colombo Plan funds “Surely this is not the mos effective role New Zealam
