£8471 Bequest To establish a prize for Canterbury University students beginning an honours degree in engineering, Mrs Mona Mary McMillan has bequeathed £8471, the residue of her estate, to commemorate her husband, the late Mr lan McMillan, a Canterbury graduate in engineering. Early Bird Many persons in Christchurch were awakened early yesterday by the high-pitched scream of a big jet aircraft. The plane, a Lockheed Starlifter on an Antarctic supply flight, landed at Christchurch Airport at 4.30 a.m. It brought 52 servicemen and scientists, as well as equipment. The plane made six stops on the way to New Zealand. It is due to leave the airport at 5 a.m. today on its return home. No official date has been given for the Starlifter flight to the Antarctic planned to take place in the middle of the month. Warm And Sunny After a cool morning, the weather in Christchurch yesterday became warm and sunny. The maximum temperature recorded at Harewood was 67 degrees soon after 4 p.m. In the Botanic Gardens the highest temperature was 66 degrees at 3 p.m. At 6 a.m. the temperature at Harewood was 39 degrees, and it rose to 57 degrees at 9 a.m., 62 degrees at noon, and 65 degrees at 3 p.m. The temperature gauge on the Government Life building registered 69 degrees at 4.30 p.m. Condliffe Prize Mr A. M. Satterthwaite has given £lOOO to the University of Canterbury for a prize to commemorate the work of Professor J. B. Condliffe. Mr Satterthwaite studied under Professor Condliffe in 1922 and became his friend. In making the gift he has suggested a prize for work in international commerce and New Zealand history, which Professor Condliffe has been engaged in, first in Canterbury and later at the University of London School of Economics, the University of California at Berkeley, and now at the Stanford Research Institute. U.S. Fellowship The University of Pennsylvania has established a Canterbury fellowship of 2000 dollars for nine months or 2400 for 12 months to enable a Canterbury University graduate in any field to continue master’s studies in Pennsylvania. If the holder wishes to continue, he may be awarded a Pennsylvania doctoral fellowship. The two universities have developed a close association, notably in the joint establishment of the Mount John Astronomical Observatory. Concession Cards Since July this year 111 more pensioners’ concession bus cards had been issued, bringing the total issued at October 7 to 4121, the Christchurch Transport Board was told yesterday.
