Necessity
T HAD a brilliant ambition 1 to become a cricketer for there are no professional cricketers as such in the West Indies. So much so that I used to spend far more time on the playing field playing cricket than I did on my studies, and, of course, with the examinations to face I knew what to expect, so I wrote my sister. “Dear sister, please prepare Dad.” My sister wrote back: “Dad is prepared, prepare yourself.” From that time I realised that I needed to stick at the game if I really wanted to do well. My dad didn't like it too well. —Conrad Hunte, vice-captain of the West Indian cricket team.
