PLANTED CYPRESS

Mrs Johnson In Canberra

(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) CANBERRA, Oct 21.

President Johnson’s wife planted a small Arizona cypress on the shore of Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra today and told a watching crowd she hoped to return to Australia to see the tree growing.

Wearing a bright red suit. Mrs Johnson amused the small crowd as she daintily placed 10 shovels of dirt around the tree with a gold coloured spade. After the ceremony Mrs Johnson spoke to some of the people and hugged several small children.

Speaking to the crowd, mostly women, Mrs Johnson said she was glad to be in Australia and added: “At home we are doing all we can to beautify our cities. “It is really wonderful to see a city like Canberra that has really been planned.”
