Two Bodies Seek ‘Stench’ Removal

The Christchurch Clean Air Society has joined forces with the Aranui Progress League to fight against “the continuance of the stench from the sewage works.”

A spokesman for the society, Mr P. Neary, said yesterday that the two organisations would hold a protest meeting at the Aranui Hall on November 1. Candidates for the Avon electorate would be invited to address the meeting. Mr Neary said that for a long time there had been complaints about the stench, but the situation had not improved. “I am convinced that a stench does come from the sewage works, and sometimes a bad odour comes from the Estuary as well,” he said. “All the citizens of Christchurch are involved in this

matter and should feel It a moral responsibility to ensure that every effort is made to eliminate the bad odours. “The complete destuction of odouis and the absence of unpleasant views must be the only acceptable solution to the general public,” he said. Mr Neary charged the Drainage Board with responsibility, and claimed that during the summer it should report weekly on the degree of pollution in the atmosphere.

“I am sure that the residents of Christchurch are very concerned about the fate of those who live around the sewage works,” he said.
