PRICES IN DECIMALS

Manufacturers Seek Law (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 13. The Manufacturers’ Federation today urged the Government to introduce legislation to ensure that prices are advertised principally in dollars and cents after the change. An Auckland delegate, Mr A. L. Laidlaw, cited the situation in Australia, where many major stores had reverted to advertising in pounds, shillings and pence. Many people in business in Australia considered the change to decimal currency had caused the recession which lasted from six to seven months, he said. The secretary of the Decimal Currency Board (Mr J. N. Searle) told the conference that one difficult factor was that of converting machines, and another was that people had lived with pounds, shillings and pence for years. “I don’t believe the Decimal Currency Board or the Government should be involved in enforcing a system,” he said.
