Sponsored Bridge The first sponsored bridge event in the South Island, the Canterbury main centre contract bridge tournament, was dominated by Christchurch players. In the pairs J. D. Thomson and H. Pickering scored 3564 points over four sessions to head off the New Zealand representatives, F. P. S. Lu and J. R. Wignail, with 3480. Three points behind, in third place, were Mrs W. Ellis and J. Vryenhoek. The Broadlands Trophy for for teams of four was won by the two leading Christchurch pairs. Otago was second and Victoria (Wellington) third. The tournament was sponsored by the Broadlands Investment Group, organised by the Canterbury Contract Bridge Association and conducted by Crockford's Club. Results were:
