OLGA TOPIC IN PORT

International Connexions

"The ship is Liberian, the owner is Jugoslavian, I am Italian, we are chartered by the British and the crew is international," said Captain G. Tidaldi, when asked about his ship the Olga Topic yesterday. The Olga Topic is visiting Lyttelton for the first time. The 10,006-ton ship, one of six of the Topic Line, is discharging phosphate at the port. Captain Tidaldi has been in ships since 1908. He has been a captain since 1919. When he qualified for a pension in Italy he joined a foreign line so that he could still draw his pension. Some of the officers aboard the Olga Topic are Jugoslavian. They leave their country as tourists—the only legal way to leave and return without being arrested. Some are married and go home each year after their tour of duty.
