Otira Gorge Road
Sir, —lt is Government policy to expand the tourist industry as rapidly as possible. Tour companies are doing a good job by using medium-priced hotels, all at a reasonable cost. To do this they have to use the shorter Otira route, which is much more interesting than the Lewis pass, which has very Similar scenery to the Haast pass. The two miles in the Otira gorge on the 400-mile Christchurch-Fox-Wanaka run
will have to be fixed before long. Is there any reason why the road cannot be relaid now along the Otira from Pegleg flat, cutting out the zig-zag with all the bends, reducing the length by about a mile, and reducing maintenance? Since this will have to be done in any case before long it is ludicrous to slap down this section of the. tourist industry and allow it to start up again iii a few years.—Yours, etc., OSCAR COBERGER. Arthur’s Pass, October 13, 1966.
