Special cheques, each of £lOOO, have been prepared in case Arnold Palmer or R. J. Charles plays the “perfect shot” during their four-match tour of New Zealand next week.
Palmer and Charles play in the Benson and Hedges challenge golf series in Dunedin. Christchurch, Wellington and i Auckland. I If either Palmer or Charles holes in one on the tour, a I cheque for £lOOO will be ; given to the golfer to present to any charity he names in New Zealand. A cheque will be issued for each hole in one scored, though the chances of several (must be very slight. There are 13 par-three holes spread among the four venues in New Zealand. Also,
there are nine par-four holes that could be within striking distance for holes in one. Balmacewan, Dunedin, has three par-three holes and three par-four holes that could be “one-shotters” if conditions are favourable.
Gary Player, in fact, scored a hole in one on the third at Balmacewan in 1958 when he hit a tremendous wood of more than 300 yards to the green.
Shirley has four par-three holes and one par-four hole that could be within range for a long tee shot. Miramar, Wellington, has three par-threes and at least four par-four holes that could be reached, depending on the wind direction and firmness of the fairway. Middlemore. Auckland, also has three par-three holes—but only one par-four hole, the eleventh, seems within driving range off-the tee.
