‘Role Of Passenger Ships Declining’

SYDNEY, October 10.
The future role of ships as passenger carriers was diminishing. Viscount Simon, a former managing-director of the P. and 0. Orient Line, said in Sydney today.
He had just arrived by! plane from England, accompanied by his wife. Viscount Simon, who retired from the P. and O. line nearly 10 years ago. said the passenger ship was on the way out.
! Association of Ports and Har- ■ hours, is in Australia to attend the 20th conference of Australian Port Authorities. He also is chairman of the Port of London authority.
“Except for a few cruises, most ships will be carrying cargo in 10 years’ time,” he said.
“Businessmen will take advantage of mammoth jet aircraft to attend business conferences, and perhaps return by ship to have a rest. “But I think cruising and other forms of tourism will definitely increase,” he said.
