RANDOM REMINDER
FUN OF THE FAIR
There won’t be much question of creeping unwillingly to school tomorrow; the boys will be flocking to the Christchurch Boys’
High School with smiling faces, and taking their parents, their sisters, their cousins and their aunts with them. For it is about 20 years since a fair was held in the school's handsome grounds, and the organisers, apparently, have felt a great need to make up for lost time. There is a hint of the extent of their endeavours in the fact that those responsible for making the sweets have had just one ton of
sugar given to them by well-wishers.
It is going to be an extraordinary day, with something for everyone and a great deal more than that for most The variety of entertainment arranged, and the scope of the purchasing possibilities, is astonishing. If you are keen to buy an Austin 7, for instance, it would be wise to be an early arrival. The fair begins at 10 a.m.
with an auction sale covering a startling range of goods—from the cars to hair curlers, with plenty of stops on the way.
If, instead of spending money on a car, you would like to make £2O, be at the I p.m. parade of vintage cars. For in each of them will be a well-known personality from various walks of life: and if you can name them more accurately than other contestants, the £2O is yours. For aesthetic appeal, the parade of floats, led by the Burnham Military Band. An hour after this, there will be a wheelbarrow
derby for primary school teams, and, later, a display
by the St Andrew’s College pipe band. There will be rafiles, and there is a lucky number competition carrying with it a flight to the Hermitage and back. Darts, chocolate wheels, side shows, a display of ancient armaments, and an opportunity to demonstrate skill with golf clubs—at chipping range. And that's not all. For
the day, the school will become a sort of high-dawi Petticoat Lane. It will b* possible to purchase almon anything, from the usual cakes and sweets (scores and scores of Christmas cakes available), hot dogs, hamburgers, garden produce and preserves to shirts and other items of clothing, sides of beef and mutton, hundreds of other items. For the very young, there will be a merry-go-round, a Noddy train, and hay rides. For the weary, there are free buses from the Avon theatre at 1 15 p.m. and 1.45 pjn. (with returns) and fo- the thirsty, an afternoon tea stall. There Is a creche for children too.
They seem to have thought of everything. The fair has been designed to raise £3OOO for the purchase of modern teaching aids. The venture deserves success. The school is one which does things well; this fair should provide a memorable experience, for those on both sides of the counters.
