The United States military command has ordered an inquiry into the accidental bombing of a friendly South Vietnamese village in which 35 people were killed and at least 17 wounded. An official said four 500pound bombs dropped on the hamlet in the central lowlands by two Marine A 4 Skyhawk jets yesterday destroyed 116 homes. One bomb failed to explode. Most of the casualties were Montagnard tribesmen attached to local Government militia units, and their dependants.

The United States had made condolence payments up to about £l5 each to the families of the dead and wounded, the official said.
