Authority To Transfer Loan Surplus Sought
The need for legislation to allow a local body to use surplus loan money to off-set an overdraft in its general account will be re-stated to the Minister of Finance (Mr Lake) by the Christchurch Drainage Board. The board was told by its finance committee that the minister, in reply to the board’s earlier request for authority to transfer loan money, had replied that he still could not support the reintroduction of provision for such transfers. The board agreed with a committee recommendation that, in view of the increasing demands being made on ratepayers and the desirability of seeking every alleviation, it approach the minister again, suggesting that the legislation could provide for Audit Department supervision.
Drains.—A report would be made on proposals for drain-
ing the catchments of Boundary and Styx drains, and it was possible that the Cavendish road drain would be piped, reported the works committee, on a complaint by Mrs A. S. Ball, of Cavendish road. She said a fence along the drain was a disgrace and an eyesore. The board decided to repair the fence, and to paint it as an aid to traffic safety. Ferrymead.—The board agreed to take over and maintain an open drain across the Ferrymead reserve, and later to consider piping it.
