PACIFIC TRADER

(NZ. Press Association*

AUCKLAND. Sept. 20.

Seven years ago Don Silk, of Auckland, completed his 28ft yacht, Patsy Jean, and took his wife and young son on a Pacific cruise. Today he arrived back in Auckland as master of the Island trader Tagua and part-owner of the Cook Islands Trading Company.

His intention seven years ago was to sail to Canada, but af ter cruising around the Society, Cook and Tonga islands for two years, he decided to settle in Rarotonga. “We called at Rarotonga quite by chance,” said Mr Silk, “then it was a very quiet, uncommer-

cialised little-frequented place full of very friendly people. We took a liking to it and settled there.”

He and a friend, Robert Boyd, who had gone with him on the trip, sold the Patsy Jean and bought a 45ft ketch, the Siren, which had been writtenoff after being wrecked on a reef.

They rebuilt her and formed their own trading company. The Siren was wrecked two years later —on the same reef from which she had been salvaged.

They placed an order for their ship, the Tagua. to be built in a Hong Kong shipyard, and she was delivered in 1964.
