Mt. Isa Applies For West Coast Rights

(From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, September 19. The big Australian company, Mount Isa Mines, Ltd., has applied for mineral prospecting warrants covering 18,500 acres of beach sands on the West Coast, extending from the Taramakau river to the Bruce Bay area. The application was made through its exploration division, Carpentaria Exploration, Ltd (Queensland). A period of five years has

been set for such prospecting and minerals sought will include ilmenite, magnetite, rutile, zircon and gold. The application was lodged at the Warden's Court at Hokitika on Friday by Mr W. J. Murray, senior geologist with the Carpentaria concern. A syndicate comprising Buller businessmen and the large Australian mining company already has warrants in respect of beach sands in the Westport area. A trial shipment of 700 tons of the sand was sent to Australia last April for testing. The world market reaction will be gauged before a decision is made on the establishment of an industry near Westport. The company is understood to be expecting the results of the tests soon.
