The new French Ambassador to New Zealand (Mr Jean Duflos) will pay his first official visit to Christchurch next week. On Thursday he will call on the Mayor (Mr G. Manning), lunch with the Christchurch Consular Corps, and present prizes of the Alliance Francaise in the evening. On Friday he will visit the University of Canterbury and Lincoln College.
The Rev. A. F. R. Parr, vicar of Leeston, has been appointed rural dean of Banks Peninsula-Ellesmere. Mr O. R. Chamberlain, a member of the Ellesmere County Council, has been appointed to fill the vacancy on the North Canterbury Catchment Board caused by the resignation of Mr E. J. Stalker. The appointment is subject to confirmation by the Heathcote. Halswell. and Wairewa county councils. Mr R. J. O'Kane. Christchurch Churchill Memorial fellow, will return to Christchurch on Saturday. Mr O’Kane, who is the general secretary of the Christchurch Young Men's Christian Association. also received a grant from the national council of the Y.M.C.A. Mr H. C. N. Matthews has been appointed to the newlycreated post of administrative assistant to the general manager of the Apple and Pear Board.—(P.A.)
