TOO MUCH EXPLOSIVE

The police were searching today for intruders who used explosives to try to blast open a door safe at the Buy Rite Supermarket, Ltd., Northcote, last night, but succeeded only in causing considerable damage. The explosion shattered a! plate glass window and punch ! cd holes in the ceiling. The thieves, thought to : have been unskilled in the ! use of explosives, ran off. An ! earlier report that one might have been injured could not be substantiated today. GAOLED FOR 18 MONTHS (N.Z. Press Association» AUCKLAND, Sept. 19. I For “trading on the credulity of an infatuated widow,” ,Mr R. M. Grant, S.M., today gaoled Joseph Foster, aged 62, ;a seaman and nightwatchman, for 18 months, Foster, who was appearing for sentence on two charges of false pretences involving £314. admitted persuading a woman to part with the j money so he could take her !and her sons to the United States. Instead he disappeared I with the money.
