Girl’s Concern For Puppies Recognised
A young schoolgirl’s concern for eight Labrador pups, whose mother was fatally injured by a hit-and-run driver about two months ago, was rewarded yesterday. .
At a presentation at Linwood High School’s assembly yesterday morning, Christina McNeill, of 46 Nursery road, received a medallion from the R.S.P.C.A. Late in June a Labrador bitch, mother of eight five-day-old pups, was severely injured at the corner of Nursery and Hillview roads by a small car which failed to stop after the accident. The bitch, Lady, had to be destroyed.
Christina heard of the accident. A friend of Lady, she had noticed the bitch was in milk. Later she found the eight pups under a vacant house in Hillview road, and
helped the S.P.C.A. to remove them to safety. Yesterday the chairman of the council of the Canterbury branch of the S.P.C.A. (Mr J. Quickenden) said the award was made to Christina for her kindness to the puppies and for her help in finding them. Mr Quickenden said the medallion was not awarded frequently. This was an occasion to show the society’s appreciation of the work of junior members. The puppies had been cared for at the society’s home for a short time, Mr Quickenden said, and eventually had found their way to good homes.
