Marked Drop Reported
A marked decrease in respiratory viral influenza occurred in the four weeks to the middle of this month according to a report issued by the research committee of the Canterbury faculty of the College of General Practitioners as part of a continuing survey made in co-operation with the Department of Health. There were 667 cases of respiratory viral infections, compared with 1222 during the previous four weeks, which were described as a period of mild epidemic. Other complaints included diarrhoea and vomiting (127), acute tonsilitis (210), otitis media or middle-ear disease (122), and staphyococcal infections (adults, 68: children, 42). A summary of the otitis media cases showed that 89 occurred in children and 24 in adults. These were in cases where details were supplied.
