Normal Work At Lyttelton
The Lyttelton Waterside Workers’ Union decided not to handle cargo destined for Wellington during the dispute there.
Normal work was done at Lyttelton yesterday and at 7 a.m. there was a large labour shortage of 276 men (16 gangs) for the 15 vessels
working cargo. The 742 men engaged included 16 nonunionists No vessel was idle but the Norman, Taupo, Kaimai, Holmdale, Beaverbank, Navua and City of Auckland were all short-manned. The Crusader Line’s chartered motor vessel, Norman, which had been scheduled to discharge at Wellington first, has been diverted to Lyttelton from New Plymouth to discharge her Lyttelton cargo before going to Wellington. She will also load cargo at Lyttelton and other ports for the return voyage to the Far East.
The only vessel at Lyttelton affected by the Wellington dispute yesterday was the inter-island steamer, Maori, which brought back 10 trailers 'of general cargo from Wellington. These were loaded at Lyttelton. Passenger cars, mails and luggage were handled at Wellington.
