Private Telephone Cable Across Lake Wakatipu
(New Zealand Press Assoctatton*
INVERCARGILL, Sept. 16. A telephone cable was laid across the bed of Lake Wakatipu today from Refuge Point, on the Cecil Peak side of the lake, about three miles to Queenstown Bay. It was laid at a depth of about 1200 feet.
Mr W. Hyde, of Milton, laid the cable at his own expense to prove that such a venture could be carried out. The launch Muratai was used to lay the cable. It took only an hour, and when the cable was attached
to a telephone at the Queenstown waterfront, clear reception was obtained immediately from the Cecil Peak Station.
The Refuge Point end of the cable was attached to a private telephone line which runs about 35 miles from the Kingston exchange round the lake shore to Mount Nicholas Station. Station owners on this line have had telephone trouble for many years because of the difficulty of maintaining the line in the rough country.
