STAMP STORY
QINCE his death, many ° countries have issued stamps to honour the memory of Sir Winston Churchill—but none have done so with greater reason than Malta. On January 24—the first anniversary of his death—the island issued a set of four stamps with a fine portrait of the man whose resolution during the war kept Malta supplied with men and materials to resist the onslaught of the Axis powers. Even before he became Prime Minister, Churchill warned the House of Commons of the need to provide Malta with air defence. As the war continued he determined to “reinforce the island, whatever the cost,” even though it meant depleting forces in other theatres of war. In January, 1941, when the situation was at its blackest, he sent a message to the Maltese people: “The eyes of all Britain and indeed the ' whole British Empire are I watching Malta in her struggle day by day, and we are
