‘Erosion’ Of Nurses’ Duties Seen

(N.Z. Frets Association)

AUCKLAND, September 14. Nursing has become vulnerable to erosion, Dr. A. W. Liley, a senior research fellow of the Research Council, said in Auckland yesterday. Dr. Liley, speaking at the graduation ceremony of the Auckland School of Nursing, said many of the duties nurses once performed had been taken out of their hands.

“Even some of the human interest has been lifted by occupational therapists, leaving nurses as the only staff who never leave the ward and never leave the patient: a kind of baby sitter as it were for everyone of us,” he said, i

“I feel that to prevent further erosion and justify and

fulfil the role of the health service, nursing must have an academic arm.”
