Town-Planning Decisions By Waimairi Council
A sub-committee to investigate the acquisition of land for industrial use was set up by the Waimairi County Council last night, when the town-planning committee reported that the Clerk (Mr K. Maclachlan) had estimated that the scheme could cost between £400,000 and £500,000. The committee, which will comprise the county chairman (Mr O. C. Mitchell) and Crs. R. C. Neville, R. C. Harrow, and M. P. Hobby, will also consider ways of financing the proposal. It was given power to act. The town-planning committee reported that plans had been received for the Rutherford residential hall at the University of Canterbury at Ham, and said that although it had been agreed that halls of residence should not be longer than 100 ft, this hall was proposed at 147 ft. Arguments had been put forward to support the view that the extra length would be acceptable from the point of view of blocking sunshine, and the committee agreed with these reasons.
The council approved the plan, subject to extra parking space being provided if at any time the council thought it necessary. Permission was given for
the Christchurch College board of governors to build a chapel at 100 Waimairi road.
A Christchurch Free Kindergarten Association application to build a kindergarten at 6 Islesworth street was approved, subject to the building being sited 10ft back from the south-west boundary. Hotel-Motel
Maurice R. Carter, Ltd., sought permission to use land in Yaldhurst road for a hotelmotel “of a very high standard.” The council had previously refused to allow land zoned residential to be used. The council decided not to give favourable consideration to the proposal, holding that the new scheme would be likely to generate even more traffic in Yaldhurst road than that likely from the original proposal. Blogg Property Developments, Ltd., was asked to amend a subdivision scheme plan so as to preserve mature native and other trees on a Withells road subdivision. A petition from 21 residents asked for the trees to be made into a reserve.
A proposal from Mr H. P. Hanna to establish an undertaker’s business at 391 Harewood road was not supported by the council. It was agreed that he should consult the council on a more acceptable proposal. The town-planning committee reported that it had not upheld objections against a proposal by Millar Brothers to add a repair garage to their service station at Withells road, and supported the application, subject to conditions as to the nature and hours of work.
To a request from the Waimairi branch of Federated Farmers that it be told of any changes in town planning likely to affect the rural zone, the council decided to reply that as changes were advertised, it could not notify organisations individually.
