Trees And Shrubs
r £'HE transplanting season for i trees and shrubs that have to be grown in the open ground will soon come to a 'close. Because of this, if you still wish to plant trees or i shrubs that can not be bought jin containers, you should ; hurry. Anything that can be grown in a container, and; there is a tremendous range, ' can be knocked out andi planted without injury at any time.
Christchurch is noted for its azaleas, and the whole of the azalea family does very well here. Azaleas like a cold climate, and because of the colder winters, they do better in the South Island than in the North.
Rhododendrons and camellias also do well in Christchurch. Camellias have a reputation for being difficult to grow, but if the moisture content is kept up in summer, they should do very well. A multitude of other shrubs' will grow well here, and your nurseryman will be able to advise you on the most suitable trees and shrubs for your own garden. The only required pruning of shrubs is to shape them. If a shrub has grown in a dis- j torted shape, it should be I balanced by pruning. But if a shrub or tree is
• given sufficient airspace when I . it is young, it should auto- i matically grow into a perfectly i balanced specimen. It is only ] 1 when it is hemmed in with < i insufficient air and light that it i . becomes misshapen. If it is I . in the shadow of a fence, the < ’ shrub will grow outwards 1 ! away from the fence, and if slit is crowded between two i [ Other shrubs it will have to : (grow upwards to the light. 1 '[ Ornamental trees outside | ‘(should have been pruned dur- I
ing the winter unless they are spring-flowering varieties, in which case they should be pruned after flowering, or even during flowering if it is more convenient. Take the flowers off and use them for decorative purposes inside the house. Deciduous trees should be pruned in the autumn or spring. As with most plants, this is the time to carry out a programme of manuring and fertilising.
