TRACK RECORD TO LORDSHIP

Spirited Finish At Hutt Park (New Zealand Press Association* WELLINGTON. Lordship showed rare courage after being checked near the five furlongs, to beat the outsider, Lonesome Valley, in a spirited finish to the President’s Handicap at Hutt Park Raceway last evening. The pacemaker, Disband, was a close third, just ahead of the other three runners.

Lordship paced the mile and a half in track record time of 3:6 3/5, beating the previous winning record of 3: 7 3/5 established when Tactile won the race last year. Robin Dundee recorded 3min 7sec when she was placed in that race, starting from the back mark. Lordship’s main mission this spring is the New Zealand Cup in November. Meanwhile his programme probably will include the Ashburton Flying Stakes next month. Lordship received a warm ovation from the good crowd when it was obvious he would win the race. He was further applauded when he was paraded after the race. The whole field began smoothly with Lordship being about two lengths from Robin Dundee on settling down. Diswent to the front from Lonesome Valley after a furlong, with Full Sovereign. Waitaki Hanover, Robin Dundee and Lordship settling down in single file. Disband set a moderate pace and D D. Nyhan realised that his chance of success with Lordship would be restricted unless he moved. He pulled Lordship out with six furlongs left and set out after Disband. After about half a furlong he drew alongside Waitaki Hanover, which propped and

checked him. Lordship recovered quickly and continued his run. Disband shaded Lonesome Valley, Full Sovereign and Lordship racing to the straight, with the other two close behind. Lonesome Valley took a short lead inside the furlong and any of the other five runners appeared to have winning chances. Lordship maintained his run wide out and won handsomely by half a length. Lonesome Valley beat Disband by a short length, with Waitaki Hanover showing great speed to finish fourth, right up, just ahead of Full Sovereign and Robin Dundee. The leaders paced the last half-mile in Imin 0 2-ssec. Lordship has now won more than £41,000. First Leg Coinsman, an unlucky fifth on the first night of the meeting, gained a decisive win in the Qtaki Handicap, first leg of the main double. He was well back in the field for most of the way, his driver, R. P. Nyhan, being content to wait until inside the last two furlongs before making a move. He was third into the straight and quickly assumed control, winning very easily indeed for his part owner and trainer, R. W. Plunkett, a member of the committee of the Wellington club. Waltzaway received the run of the race, but was pushed back a shade racing into the straight. He came strongly over the last half furlong to get second, more than a length in front of Calm Autumn, which was one of the slow beginners and was still third last at the half-mile. However, she improved to take the lead when the pacemaker, Light Silk, began to drop out on the home turn.

The hot favourite, Amend, which was forced very wide when he began to improve from last near the half- mile was not disgraced in fourth place, just ahead of Abbey Frost and Smart Lass. Abbey Frost began best, but broke after less than

a furlong. He was well back until the straight. Winfield Chief, which had every chance, tired to seventh ahead of Thunderina and Valiant Sandy. Sure Bill from Te Awamutu, the outsider of the field for a win, caused a major upset when he shaded the favourite, Direct Globe, in the Master ton Handicap. the second leg of the double. He broke just after the start and agaih after less than half a mile, but did not lose much ground each time. Direct Globe forced alii of the pace, being closely attended for a time by Frisky. Sure Belli improved sharply from sixth at the half-mile to be on terms with Direct Globe racing to the straight. They had a great battle with Sure Bill doing best to win by a long neck. Six lengths back, the offcourse substitute, Karen Brigade, struggled on for third, a neck in front of Peterborough. Belle Serene was a fair fifth, ahead of Control and Frisky. Big Charge, Free Return, Stay By and Single Cash made mistakes in the running.
