Travel Allowance
Sir,—lt has eome to my notice that in a report of the financial situation in which I found myself when visiting Rome recently because of the present currency restrictions, a statement was made that I found it impossible to change a £5 note into singles. On this point I have been quoted incorrectly as, of course, it has not been permitted to take £5 notes out of the country for some years. What 1 did say was that I found it impossible to cash single £1 notes because I found these unacceptable anywhere in the world. I did, in fact, finally cash two single notes in a bank in Switzerland after 1 had been refused on many occasions in other countries, and even in this instance I had to accept a substantial discount —Yours, etc.; L. A. MANNING. Mayor, Onehunga. September 13, 1966.
