"MR RUNNER-UP” IST Stolle Wins U.S. Singles Title

(5.Z.P.A Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK. F. Stolle has won the United States men’s singles championship by defeating a fellow Australian, J. Newcombe, 4-6,12-10, 6-3,6-4. Miss Maria Bueno, of Brazil, won the women’s singles championship for the fourth time, beating Miss Nancy Richey, 6-3, 6-1.

Stolle’s victory was one of his few r ajor championships and the first time two unseeded players had met for the American title.

Stolle had been a finalist in the United States championships once before and a finalist at Wimbledon three times. Because of this he is known locally as—"Mr Run-

ner-up.” A capacity crowd of more than 13,000 watched Stolle and Newcombe battle the final for 2hr 20min. Gaining strength as the match went on, Stolle broke Newcombe’s service in the ninth game of the fourth set to win. The victory made Stolle the target of a possible 100,QOO dollar professional contract. “They offered me 60,000 for two years and I said no,” Stolle said. “I’m not interested in just being another pro. If they want to talk real money, I’ll listen. “As an unseeded player I'm

quite happy to have won the championship,” he said. “I played pretty well all week.” Miss Bueno’s greater variety of strokes was a decisive factor in her win. While Miss Richey, seeded third, played mainly from the base line, Miss Bueno was much surer on the volley. Although she missed several smashes at the beginning of the 48-minute match, Miss Bueno, the No. 2, seed, gradually gained confidence in spite of Miss Richey’s consistent and well placed driving. American Triumph In Cleveland, Ohio, United States Davis Cup players defeated Australia in three

matches to complete a 5-0 triumph in the first of an exhibition series. C. Pasarell beat A. Roche, 3-6, 7-5, 9-7, and A. Ashe bowled over W. Bowrey, 6-3, 6-4. Then the new doubles team of D. Ralston and M. Riessen scored a 64, 6-3 victory over Roche and Bowrey. The United States played without one of its top performers, C. Graebner, of Cleveland, who was suspended from the squad last week, while Australia was without F. Stolle. The next match in the series will be held in Toledo, Ohio, with Pasarell meeting Bowrey and Ralston meeting R. Emerson.
