Council Short Of Electricians

Unless at least one more electrician was obtained, the Lyttelton Borough Council’s electricity trading department could not guarantee to .do any further wiring or give satisfactory service to consumers requiring repairs to appliances or installations, the electrical overseer (Mr R. P. Miller) reported to the council last evening. Mr Miller said that the department was still understaffed. There were four replies to advertisements but nothing came of them. Arrangements had been completed to assist an electricianserviceman to emigrate from England and he was expected to begin work in December. At present stand-by duties were being carried out by the inspector-serviceman, who also made some inspections and attended to consumer faults and appliance repairs. Cashin quay would be the main public parking area on September 25, the day of the Christchurch International

Boat and Outdoors Exhibition, said the Mayor (Mr J. B. Collett). It was expected up to 1000 vehicles would be accommodated on the quay. Norwich and Gladstone quays would be no-parking areas and there would be no parking allowed on the seaward side of Sumner road from the bottom up to Windy Point, said Mr Collett. With the help of extra traffic officers it was hoped that the congestion there was when the submarine Tabard was in Lyttelton would be avoided. Building Permits.—Building permits valued at £14,410 had been granted in Lyttelton during the last six weeks, the town clerk (Mr J. Thompson) .said. The largest single amount was £6500 for a fish storage freezer for Fish Processing, Ltd. Drainage And Plumbing.— Four permits for drainage and plumbing work worth £552 were issued during August, the borough health inspector (Mr J. L. O’Callaghan) reported. Plans had been drawn for new conveniences at Corsair Bay.
