Sumner Beach

Sir, —I am a “Sumner mum.” All through this year 1 have hauled my pram up the steps to get on to the “front” for a look at the sea, and now that summer is almost here and my baby is old enough to play on the sand, I am faced with a climb down the boulders and rocks, baby under the arm and the appurtenances of the baby slung on my back. Th it should leave me one free hand to steady my climb. As a mum I do have the happy expectation that by next summer my child should be able to climb both steps and

rocks. But what of the many old folk who live in Sumner? They cannot get anywhere near the sea. I would like to ask the responsible department to supply at least one ramp along the stretch of esplanade and perhaps two sets of steps down to the beach. Now that our rates have gone up 25 per cent this should not be an impossible amenity to expect.—Yours, etC ” A SUMNER MUM. August 24, 1966. [The city engineer (Mr P. G. Secular) replies: “Final stability of the rocks has not yet been reached, and additional loads of rock are required to be placed from time to time, but arrangements have been made for steps down to the beach, although these will necessarily be a temporary measure.”]
