STRUCK BY LIGHTNING

DC3 Forced To Turn Back

(N.Z. Press Association l

GISBORNE, Sept. 9.

An aircraft which left Gisborne this morning on a flight north had to return twice, the second time because it had been struck by lightning. The plane was a National Airways Corporation DC3, scheduled to fly from Gisborne to Whakatane and Auckland.

It left Gisborne for Whakatane at 7.45 a.m., but bad weather closed Whakatane Airport and the plane returned about 8.15 a.m. At 10 a.m. it left again for Whakatane. This time it encountered an electrical storm and was struck by lightning. The aircraft was back in Gisborne at 11 a.m. Its instruments were affected by the lightning and an engineer was called from Wellington.
