Action On Tasman Shipping Deferred
The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce has deferred action on trans-Tasman shipping until more replies are made to the chamber’s questionnaire and until the chamber and the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association have discussed a combined approach to the Union Steam Ship Company.
In a report to the chamber’s council last evening, the acting chairman of the trade promotion committee (Mr R. E. Smith) said that the subject of trans-Tasman shipping had been taken up with the Sydney Chamber of Commerce.
“We learned that in Sydney there is an organisation known as the Australian General Cargo Shippers’ Committee, which was formed last July and serves as a coordinating point for shippers
for discussions and negotiations with conferences and shipping services,” said Mr Smith. “Particular attention has been given to the trans-Tas-man services and this committee is seeking an improve;ment in the shipping services |to the South Island.
“It has requested an early announcement from the Union company of what is feasible and intended.” Mr Smith said that the trade promotion committee meeting noted that the Union company had informed the Associated Chambers of Commerce that a roll-on, roll-off service to South Island main ports was under consideration, and further studies were being held.
