THEFTS OF SHRUBS
North-Western Suburbs
Plants and shrubs are being stolen from private gardens in the Bryndwr, Bishopdale, and Harewood districts. One householder had a 6ft red beech tree stolen. He had been at considerable pains to get the tree established. The tree was removed, roots and all, and the hole left filled in and smoothed over. •
The proprietor of a garden shop in Papanui said that he had had more than a dozen customers coming in to get replacements for stolen shrubs. “The shrub snatchers are not operating in Papanui so much as in the area to the north-west,” he said. It is noticeable that most of the shrubs have been taken from gardens with high front fences. This enables the snatchers to work without being noticed from the street. “As a member of the local beautifying association, I dislike high frdnt fences, and tell customers complaining about shrubs being stolen that they would be better off both economically and aesthetically with low front fences or hedges,” he said.
