September 10 MAUNGATAPU MURDERS. The “Wellington Independent,” of the Sth, states “that His Honor Mr Justice Johnston will proceed to Nelson today in the Phoebe, to open the Supreme Court there, and try the men who are charged with committing the Maungatapu _ murders.” The “Marlborough News” also states—“ The expectation of further fIHMB disclosures that was felt by almost every ■HSH one in the community after the ‘confes- ' ; 1 ‘ ■ s’ of the two wretches who were implicated in the most diabolical deeds ever known in this colony, is already 1
partly realised. It will be remembered that Burgess stated, after various appeals to the Supreme Being, that the gun discovered through the information given by Sullivan belonged to Sullivan. At the time little reliance was placed in what Burgess said; and we now learn that the gun in question was taken to Hokitika for identification; and that it was there claimed by a man who stated that Burgess stole it from him nine months ago, previous to Sullivan's arrival in New Zealand. By means of a microscope, the name of •Noon’, one of Kelly’s aliases, was traced op the stock. . . «
