NEW TUG

Funds For

Purchase

The purchase of a new tug was approved by the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday. Mr J. A. Cashin, the engin-eer-in-chief. was asked to prepare an outline of specifications and invite a London consulting engineer to complete detailed specifications for calling tenders. For the finance committee, Mr E. Brophy reported that the board was in a financial position to buy a tug. The cost was estimated at £145,000 to £160,000. The board would not have to go on the loan market for the money. “The Lyttelton I is 55 years old and becoming redundant,” Mr L. G. Amos, the chairman, said. '

Mr W. B. Laing: Don't say too much. We might want to sell it.

It was still good and might suit somewhere else, Mr Amos continued, but the port needed another tug. It had always been considered that there would be a tug on stand-by for Cashin quay. Having regard to the future size of vessels and the importance of fire-fighting, a new tug was warranted.
