Pressure On Asian Studies
(N.Z. Press Association/ WELLINGTON, Sept. 6. There was a danger of too much pressure being put on Asian studies, the new director of the Asian Studies Centre at Victoria University, Professor K. Janaki, said tonight. “It is close to becoming a fad,” she said in her inaugural address at the university. Because of factors such as trade and international relations, there was considerable pressure to “manufacture” Asian experts, but many of these experts could gain only a superficial knowledge of Asia, she said.
