r was a long grind over Porters Pass before they struggled up the mountainside on foot, laden with skis, food and clothing. Then they had two or three downward runs before setting off home. To take children was unthinkable. Gradually huts were built, tows installed and rough access roads put in. But it was not until the main road was improved and travelling time cut to a minimum that it became possible for whole families to use the fields. It has become a family sport and it will probably become a commercial sport with the fields run on a pro-fit-making basis rather than by overworked club officials,
